ITV tried many times to create a pop music show
that could rival the BBC's iconic Top of the Pops.
Supersonic was just one of many.
Here's a few more that may jog some memories:

Alright Now

Alright Now was a British rock music television series
made by Tyne Tees Television for ITV in 1979–1980.
The show, named after the song "All Right Now" by the band Free,
showcased both established and up-and-coming acts,
with a focus on those from North East England.
Among these were Dire Straits and The Police.
The show was initially hosted by former Darts singer Den Hegarty,
but he was dismissed from the show for "outrageous" behaviour.
He later became a host of the ATV children's show Tiswas.

Arrows

Arrows was a pop television series aimed at the teen market,
which aired in 1976 and 1977 in the UK.
The group Arrows would perform their own songs, and introduce the guest artists.
How the band got this gig remains mystery.
They were quite good though and wrote 'I Love Rock n Roll'
later covered by Joan Jett and others.

Check it Out

Check it Out was a youth-oriented television series produced
twice weekly by Tyne Tees Television for ITV from 1979 to 1982.
It presented a mix of rock music performances and segments
dealing with social issues including homelessness and homosexuality.
The show was notorious for an appearance by the band Public Image Ltd,
in which John Lydon became angry at the interviewer's questions
and walked out of the studio.

Get It Together

Produced by Granada Television for the UK ITV network
between 6 April 1977 and 22 December 1981.
This one was a bit crap really but they had some good acts.
It was presented by former 'straight man' to Basil Brush, Roy North.
That was the most memorable thing!
Watching Mr. Roy desperately trying to forge a career without that bloody fox.

Shang-a-Lang

Shang-a-Lang was a children's pop music TV series
starring the Scottish band, the Bay City Rollers.
It was produced in Manchester by Granada Television
for the ITV network and ran for one 20-week series in 1975.
Back when the Rollers were King!
It Was very popular with the girls.

So it Goes

So It Goes was a British TV music show presented by Tony Wilson
on Granada Television between 1976 and 1977.
Famous for showcasing the then burgeoning punk rock movement.
It was named partially in reference to Kurt Vonnegut's 1969 novel Slaughterhouse-Five.
An expletive-strewn appearance by Iggy Pop proved too much for Granada bosses,
leading to the cancellation of a third series.

Supersonic DVD Vol.1

Reposted from November 2021

I remember it well...
You rush home from school, Mum gets your tea ready.
The TV is on...it's time for Supersonic!
Fork pauses half way between plate and mouth....Jethro Tull...wow!
My mother was not impressed by their beer-sodden antics.

I have four DVDs of this show.
All vaugely "directed" by, the outrageously camp, Mike Mansfield.
The latter ones gradually disolve into crappy pop stuff,
which is still fun from a nostalgic POV, but this first one is killer.
Pull on your knitted starry tank-top and set the time machine to the mid 1970s.

He added a new dimension to the band's sound.

so I've uploaded that as well.

Judas Priest
Unleashed Revisited (78/79)

This is the 'Unleashed in the East' live album reworked
with the tracks from the E.P./singles reintegrated.
It is different to the Japanese releses you may see around.
I used a 1978 recording for White Heat
which I think was the B-side of a 12" release.
(It was a long time ago when I did this CD and memory fails me)
All the songs were put back in their original running order.
but We are missing 'Take on All the World'
as I'm unaware of any decent quality version and it's a crap song anyway.
A good old-fashioned brick-wall remaster.
Keep away from pets and small children.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Great American Music Hall
San Francisco, CA
November 3rd 2004

Reposted from November 2020

Remastered audience recording.
The phrase avant-garde is bandied around a lot.
Rarely is the guard more advanced than Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
I'd describe it as brilliantly organised chaos.
It's a very good recording of very strange music.
If you are not familiar with them but go for Henry Cow,
Virgin Prunes. Cardiacs and King Crimson you may well enjoy it.
It may disturb you. It scares the willies out of me.
I'm kidding of course...once you have heard Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music
everything else sounds like ABBA.

Folk och Rackare

This outfit seems to have some notoriety in Sweden.
They were influenced by British folk bands
such as Pentangle, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention
which they combined with elements of traditional Swedish folk music.
If you enjoy things like Steeleye Span's 'Gaudete' then this could be for you.

I really enjoyed it and recommend it to all the Folkies out there.

I'm going to York for a couple of days.
One of my favourite cities.

1.
York has, since Roman times, been defended by walls
of one form or another. To this day, substantial portions
of the walls remain, and York has more miles of intact wall
than any other city in England. They are known variously
as York City Walls, the Bar Walls and the Roman walls
(though this last is a misnomer as very little
of the extant stonework is of Roman origin, and the course
of the wall has been substantially altered since Roman times).
The walls are generally 13 feet (4 m) high and 6 feet (1.8 m) wide.
You can 'walk the walls' for which there is no charge.

2.
The Shambles is a historic street in York, England,
featuring preserved medieval buildings,
some dating back as far as the 14th century.#
The street is narrow, with many timber-framed buildings
with jettied floors that overhang the street by several feet.
It was once known as The Great Flesh Shambles,
probably from the Anglo-Saxon Fleshammels (literally flesh-shelves),
the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat.
In 1885, thirty-one butchers' shops were located along the street,
but none remain today. It is now a medieval shopping mall
with tourist-trap prices but no charge for looking! :)

3.
The Three Tuns is a pub on Coppergate, in the city centre.
The building is recorded as having been a pub from at least 1782.
Fair to say it has endured a lot of subsidence over the years!
In 1970, a cache of silver coins was discovered,
and a cache of gold coins was also found
during renovations on the customer service area.

4.
The keep of the medieval Norman castle is commonly referred to as Clifford's Tower.
Originally constructed on the orders of William I.
The first motte and bailey castle on the site was built in 1068
following the Norman conquest of York.
It has a long, interesting and chequered history

5.
The Black Swan is another old favourite pub of mine.
It's had numerous rebuilds and alterations over centuries
but the original building dates back to around 1417.

6.
York Minster is the city's cathedral.
The first record of a church on the site dates to 627.
Yes, 627.

7.
York is home to the National Railway Museum.
A vast collection which includes such iconic steam engines
as the Flying Scotsman and the fabulous Mallard.
Entrance is free!

8.
Micklegate Bar is a four-storey-high gatehouse.
It was the traditional ceremonial gate for monarchs arriving in York,
who, in a custom dating to Richard II in 1389,
would touch the state sword as they entered the city.

Reposted from September 2021

Stone Henge is rubbish.
It always was and nowadays it's even worse.
They built a 'visitor centre' , charge you a fortune
and you will not be allowed to touch the stones.
Avebury (pictured above) is far better.
If you are interested in Neolithic sites
you can go there and explore for free.
It runs rings round Stone Henge (see what I did there?)
I've been a couple of times and loved it.
My interest was first sparked by the 1977 TV series
'Children of the Stones' with the wonderful Iain Cuthbertson.
It was aimed at children but I still enjoy it as an adult.
Worth it for the haunting theme music alone!
You can get the entire series here

The Pineapple Thief
Robin 2
Bilston, England
September 16th 2012

Remastered audience recording.
I'd describe Pineapple Thief (the lesser known PT) as indie-prog.
Sound quality is reasonable with no chatters.
I've been to the Robin a few times over the years.
When it works it's a great venue but all too often
there are more spouses/roadcrew than actual paying punters
and we would all spread out a bit in a feeble attempt
to make it slightly less depressing for the bands.
You only need one of the two download options BTW.

Progglådan Box C: Folkprogg & Sjungande låtskrivare
(folk progg & singing songwriters)
CD 301 Bernt Staf

The third box begins with Bernt Staf who was a writer, actor,
acoustic guitar strummer, Marmite-singer and occasional whistler.

I believe the lyrics have socio-political meaning
but any of that is lost on me as I don't speak the lingo.
'Pick a Bale of Hay' is, sort of. sung in English
but probably not representative of Bernt's lyrics.
He had a big hit with the song 'Familjelycka',
for which he won a Grammy, so somebody must like him.
I didn't find it unlistenable to be fair but he ain't no Roy Harper.
