Ulysses (1954)

Another version of Homer's famous Greek legend.

Starring Kirk Douglas and Silvana Mangano.

An international co-production between Italy, France, and the United States.

The film was shot with all the actors speaking their own languages

since it was to be dubbed later.

Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn did their own dubbing for the English version.

There's a choice of audio in Italian or English

plus optional English subtitles.

trivia corner : Kirk Douglas met his second wife Anne Buydens during filming.

They had just finished recording Quark, Strangeness and Charm

and this has interesting proto versions of the Quark tracks.

The album was only released in June

so the audience would have been unfamiliar with that material.

I saw them in early June before the album was out

so I remember how that felt.

Excellent gig with Bob loud and clear.

Who doesn't want to hear Hawkwind do Velvet Underground? :)

Barbarella (1968)

A lavishly beautiful fantasy directed by Roger Vadim

based on the French comic series by Jean-Claude Forest.

I've lost count of the times I've watched this over the years.

Many notable performances from the wonderful cast

who seem revel in the chance to ham it up.

This copy is in it's full wide screen glory.

There are various optional subtitles

and a choice of audio in German, English or Spanish.

Hoola Bandoola Band

Wonderful performance by the Hoolas fronted by Mikael Wiehe.

Great songs done in different styles.

There's a country/blues influence mixed with folky tunes.

Reminds me of The Band or CSN.

I'm sure you'll disagree with my comparisons :)

Based on Richard Matheson's 1956 novel 'The Shrinking Man'.

Starring Grant Williams as the contracting champion.

Incredible but not inedible.

I was disappointed, to say the least, at the far-right Alternative for Germany's

successes in the recent Deutsche elections.

I'm beginning to accept I am on the wrong side of current politics.

Authoritarian rule/control of the media/unjudicial law.

Who exactly will 'breathe a sigh of relief' once that is in place?

But they vote for it.

I really don't get it.

So disheartening,

Here's a selection of world prices at the pump.

I thought it interesting to compare on a like-for-like basis

as the litre/gallon difference and the various currencies muddy the waters.

On first glance one might feel scathing of complaining Americans

who get their fuel for half the price we do in the UK.

However, when you factor in the approximate average annual mileage:

UK - 7,000/USA - 14000

it is pretty much the same.

I wonder if there is a pattern here?

You can't go far in Hong Kong

and those Libyans probably drive across the desert all day.

It would need further research into average incomes etc. to get a better picture

but the potential variations would probably be impossible to quantify.

A short set opening for Steve Goodman.

(for whom Warren played drums)

The Goodman set was also recorded.

This show was just one month after the release

of Warren's self-titled (major label) debut album.

An earlier effort, 1970's 'Wanted Dead or Alive', had sunk without fanfare.

fun fact: Kim Fowley was the producer for 'Wanted Dead or Alive'

but he abandoned the project after clashing with Zevon

who wanted to play all the instruments which bugged Kim.

Fowley was not credited on the album.

Heavy Metal (1981)

A graphic novel brought to the screen (a bit cheesy but good fun)

with music from Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Sammy Hagar,

Don Felder, Cheap Trick, DEVO, Journey, and Nazareth.

This Canadian animated film is an anthology of science-fiction and fantasy stories

tied together by a single theme of an evil force: "the sum of all evils".

Optional multi-subs are included.

Hawkwind

The Starwood

Remastered audience recording.

Not great quality but may be of interest to die-hard Hawkheads.

I spent far too much time on it including patching gaps

but at the end of the day I was, as they say in the trade, polishing a turd.

Quite enjoyable non the less.

It brought back memories for me: The Robot coming onstage

and a dude in a full NASA Apollo style spacesuit lumbering around as Bob Calvert

manically waved a huge American flag on a pole during 'Uncle Sam's on Mars'.

They played a residency at the Starwood from March 22nd to March 25th.

The 1978 US expedition was the final hurrah for this line-up.

Simons House/King and Adrian Shaw all left the band after the tour

leaving Brock and Calvert with some recruiting to do.

Dumb-Hounded (1943)

Directed by Tex Avery and written by Rich Hogan.

It was the first cartoon to feature Avery's character Droopy

although the name "Droopy" had not been adopted at this point.

Droopy's meek, deadpan voice and personality were modelled after

the character Wallace Wimple on the radio comedy Fibber McGee and Molly.

Actor Bill Thompson, who played Wimple, was the original voice of Droopy.

While Thompson served in the US Navy during World War II, Droopy's voice

was provided by other voice actors, including Don Messick,

who reprised the role in the 1990s.

Avery's preferred gag man Heck Allen said that Avery himself

provided the voice on several occasions, and "You couldn't tell the difference".

There are French and English audio options.

Jason and the Argonauts (1963)

Starring Todd Armstrong as Jason (dubbed British accent by Tim Turner, uncredited)

and Nancy Kovack as Medea (dubbed British accent by Eva Haddon, uncredited)

The amazing work of legendary stop-frame animator Ray Harryhausen is the real ster.

There are some extras including an interview with the man himself.

I watched The Odyssey a couple of weeks ago and it was terrible.

Not a patch on this vintage masterpiece.

This DVD has a choice of audio in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian

as well as a wide selection of subtitles.
