The cost of gigging crisis. (part two: 1978)

Reposted from September 2022

You'll have to take my word for it, but this 'D' is in fact Hawkwind.
We see that Mr. Brock has upped his fee to £3.

£2.80 seems to be the standard going rate in 78.
Judas Priest and Steve Hackett being examples:

Perhaps surprisingly, the mighty Meat Loaf only charged £2.50.

So the big man wins the Titus Luxor 'People's Champion of 1978' award.

Steve Hackett
Barcelona Teatre Musical
Catalonia, Spain
May 28th 2014

Remastered audience capture.
Not as long as the show I posted from the US leg of this tour.
Our Catalonian amics are very enthusiastic and occasionally talkative
but I think the reworked recording turned out quite well.

Steve Hackett
Royal Albert Hall
London, England
October 23rd 2024

Remastered audience recording.
I'll wager it won't be long before this gig is out on CD and/or DVD.
The sound quality is 'not bad' with minimal crowd chatter
but occasionally the band's volume overwhelms the taper's mics
especially when Jonas hits those bass pedals.

Steve Hackett Acoustic Trio
Teatro Saschall
Firenze, Italy
April 26th 2005

Remastered audience recording.
Although our Florentine friends are generally respectful and attentive
their applause after each piece dwarfed the music
so it was difficult/challenging to work with.
I tried my best to do it justice.
Anyone who is British, and of a certain age, will remember the opening tune.
When rodents were tortured by being forced onto a plastic toy boat
...much to our delight!

Had Hammy Hamster been a water rat he would have jumped ship at the first opportunity.
I struggled with the setlist but hopefully I'm not too far off with the titles.
There are many improvs and references to different compositions.

Titus

Set 1 (solo)

Steve Hackett
Historische Stadthalle
Wuppertal, Germany
April 16th 2023

My remaster of the last of three concerts
with orchestra and choir at the Historische Stadthalle.
Orchestras with rock bands can be hit and miss
but I think this show works really well.
The audience are very attentive and well behaved
although I removed/quelled a few of the louder whoops between songs
and a small part during the intro where our taper talked.
The source is very listenable but I found it a bit sharp,
especially the cymbals, so I tried to reduce that harshness
while maintaining an overall brightness.
It seems a bit more comfortable on the ears now (I hope)

Steve Hackett - guitars/vocals
Roger King - keyboards
Craig Blundell - drums, percussion
Rob Townsend - sax, flute and percussion
Jonas Reingold - bass, guitar

Steve Hackett
Cropredy, Oxfordshire UK
August 12th 2022

An audience recording straight off the butcher's block.
It's Steve's recent show at the annual Fairport Convention bash.

'near Banbury'...hmmm...ride a cockhorse... (Stop that right now...Ed.)
Jonas' bass comes through beautifully on this.
Hackett has effectively head-hunted him from being a Flower King.
Roine Stolt's brother, Michael, has returned to TFK bass duties.

Steve Hackett
Weyfest
Farnham, Surrey
September 2nd 2012

A shorter than usual festival set with the band consigned to warm-up act for ASIA.
I suspect that is why, even though Amanda Lehmann is present,
we only get the instrumental version of the Hierophant.
I'm not well up on this festival...looks interesting:

Sound improves after the first track during which there are obviously issues.
Steve, jokingly, refers to it as a soundcheck.
It's an audience sourced recording which is quite good
and the punters are well behaved.
I resisted the urge to push it too much
so you might need to crank it up a notch of two to let it breathe.
'Waking to Life' somehow reminds me of Monsoon. (remember them?)

Superb show from Steve Hackett and Co. in Manchester last night.
I thought they played better than they do on the Bexhill recording.

Was talking to a couple of guys in the interval.
They were enthusing about this "great bass player".
I gave them the full Flower Kings sales pitch and they took notes!
...and then I encouraged them to visit a certain blog 😀

Thanks to Paul P.  for the photos.

Steve Hackett
'Foxtrot at 50'
De La Warr Pavilion
Bexhill, UK
September 17th 2022

A lovingly remastered audience recording.
There are a few digital clicks,
mostly noticable in some of the quieter moments,
which I couldn't remove without adversly affecting the music.
Generally, though, I was reasonably pleased with the result.
Enjoy!

Steve Hackett
Bottom Line
New York
September 30th 1980

Another show from The Bottom Line.
Reasonable quality but has a timecode displayed throughout.
This one takes me right back to his first solo tour in 78
as the band line up was pretty much the same.
I was unsure about Pete Hicks as a lead vocalist at the time.
but I appreciate him more with the passing of time.
This is my re-authored DVD and I altered the cover art to match.
You get bonus points if you can identify the music I used for the extras.

The Bottom Line

August 18th 1992

This is a decent quality copy in MKV format.
Very nice footage presumably from a Japanese rebroadcast
as there are subtitles that look Japanese to me.
It's 'pro-shot' but I don't think any of the people involved
need apply to the BBC any time soon!
An unusal, for Steve, four-piece band.
Dave Ball is great on the bass.
He was also a member of Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia.

Steve Hackett

Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo, NY

from Roger King who is normally flawless.
It's an audience capture but the crowd are generally well behaved.

It was 20 years ago today...
Here's an audience sourced remaster

I spent some time working on it
but I'm not sure how successful the result was.
Some really good stuff here though so I hope you enjoy it.
The Genesis songs are all instrumental versions.
This gig was on the day John Entwistle died

Steve Hackett report
Bradford 2021

Thouroughly enjoyed it. Far better than the Tull show.
I was relieved the sound and performance
seemed much improved compared to the Liverpool gig I posted.
My first time in Bradford and I quite liked it.
Drink prices were very good as well!
Even the local car park was Genesis themed:

I don't often take photos at concerts (as you can probably tell)
but in my role as roving reporter for TLD I took a couple.

Row K turned out to be the 5th row...strange..,but nice for me.
Maybe they have their own version of the alphabet in Bradford?.

The whole band were on good form
and they looked like they were really enjoying themselves.
Man of the match: Jonas Reingold.
regards
Titus

Thursday, 23 September 2021

Two gigs next week.
The first in over 18 months.
2nd row for Tull in Blackburn
and 7th row for Steve  Hackett in Bradford.
I'm really looking forward to live music again.

Titus
