Van der Graaf
Hull University
November 3rd 1977

Not bad audience recording and quite a rare item.
This was at the time of The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome
when they had dropped the 'Generator' from the band name.
I saw them the day after this in Preston.
Remember going for the tickets the day they went on sale.
Was at the box office a good hour before it opened
expecting a queue but I was the only person there.
I feared I had got the wrong day but at 10am
the glass windows were opened and when I asked about
VDG the woman said they were available and handed me
the untouched seating plan.
I picked the two seats in the middle of the front row of course!

Says D9 but that was the front row.
Guess they remove some rows depending on the event.
She said £3 which I thought was a bit expensive.
Gig tickets at the time were around £2.25.
75p was a lot to a 14 year old in 1977.
Then I realised that was for both tickets.
I took my girlfriend who was a couple of years older than me
and I even got served beer as the bartender was so busy
looking at her he didn't really pay any attention to me.
I swear she was the only female in there,
The rest of the audience all looked like angst ridden college boys.
Classic fans of Hammill's angst ridden lyrics.
All acne/masterbation/self-loathing and maybe a bit of studying.
regards
Titus

  1. They and their younger brothers, plus a few in combat jackets who'd dropped out of courses at the-then Poly, were back at the Guild Hall in March 86 for the Tangerine Dream gig.

  2. cheers Fanny. I was of course being provocative. They were good and clever people who were at the gig.

  3. Thanks. I like these concerts reviews / stories. Sometimes they are even better than the concert itself. Yes, as a tormented teenager myself, Peter Hammill was one of my heroes.
