James Gang
1971/1974 DVD

A big Hallå to my silent Swedish visitors.
(and an "Oreet?" to everyone else)
Here's three James Gang TV appearances.
First is from Paris 71. When Joe Walsh was in the band.
From the 'Pop Deux' French TV show.
The audio for this is a bit hit and miss.
The issues are from the actual show
so a big boo/hiss to the French sound people.
at times the music volume drops but the vocals are still loud.
Despite those problems it's still worth seeing.
The second, also 71/Walsh, is their spot on the German show BeatClub.
Just one song but excellent.
Although the focus on this group often revolves
around their illustrious guitar players,
it has to be said: Jim Fox is a brilliant drummer.

Lastly we have their 74 Don Kirshner's Rock Concert session.
This is with the effervescent Roy Kenner on vocals/percussion
and Tommy Bolin on guitar.
Bolin did two years in James Gang, 72-74.
In 1975 he joined Deep Purple replacing Ritchie Blackmore.
The 'Come Taste the Band' album was not great
and I've heard recordings of the subsequent tour.
Bolin is not in good shape.
Jon Lord is taking solos that were once Ritchie's parts.
I guess Tommy got paid more than he had ever seen before
and we can guess what he spent it on.
Tommy died, having consumed a cocktail of drugs, on December 4th 1976.
He was only 25.
I have socks older than that.
And T shirts old enough to be his Dad.
He plays great on this DVD and creates some very unusual
(especially for the time) sounds/effects.
Let's remember Tommy Bolin like this yes?
regards
Titus

  1. I think Tommy would have survived if he hadn't met Glenn Hughes. Excess was the name of the game in those years and much different than now. Jeff Beck changed direction while on tour from the final concerts with Tommy. Motor City John

  2. Yeah John, Glenn's influence is often cited. But he's still going!
