Marillion
Zuiderpark
The Hague, Netherlands
July 3rd 1983

A remastered radio broadcast from the Fish era.
I was never a big fan to be honest.
Although I have mellowed my attitude towards them over time
this early stuff still sounds like a poor attempt to copy Genesis.
The same accusation could be laid at the door of IQ but I like them.
It's a thin line between plagiarism and influence.
I saw Marilion in 82 or 83.
Peter Hammill was their support act.
Hammill blew them away and should have headlined.
I respect Steve Hogarth a lot for steering the band
in a more creative/individual direction
even though I find a lot of it somewhat bland/one-paced.
On a positive note: this is a pretty good recording
and I know they have a devoted following.
Guitarist Steve Rothery's band played an all-day event I attended
a few years ago and I quite liked that. It had more spirit.

  1. Kind of devoted follower, I always appreciated Fish's solo efforts and still remain fond of Misplaced Childhood, which is IMHO a masterpiece that has no relation at all with Genesis look alike. This being said,
Greetings from Paris and thanks for sharing,

    2. Always nice to fight in the corner, remember Mohammed Ali vs Foreman and then suddenly the glorious jab.
Just joking, but honestly my father woke me up for that fight in Zaïre in the middle of the night. And never forget. Love my father for such memories.
Uuuh, of course... we're talking about music...
