Before the construction of the first dam at Aswan*
the Nile flooded twice a year, bursting it's banks.
The nutriant rich silt left behind when the waters subsided
was the source of Egypt's wealth.
When the Romans invaded, in around 30 B.C. ,
they installed 'Nileometers' to measure the peak of the flood.
The higher the level...the higher the taxes.
An interesting insight into the origins of the modern tax system.

The British finished the first dam in 1902 but, by 1918, their grip on Egypt
was already slipping with the Egyptians demanding independence.
The second dam was built/funded by the Russians and construction began in 1960.
