Recent polls suggest:
1. 38% of Americans under age 30 are in favour of an authoritarian rule
rather than the current (admittedly unhealthy) democratic system.
2. Two thirds of young Americans have never heard of The Holocaust.
I suspect the two results are not unconnected and I'm probably not alone
in fearing that Europe is heading down the same dark road.

On a slightly positive note, I was working in a Catholic Secondary College for 25yrs (now retired - yeh ! ) and part of the Yr10 History curriculum covered the World War II and the Holocaust. I participated in many excursions with our students to the Holocaust Centre/Museum in Melbourne (alongside many other visiting schools) and can proudly vouch that many of our young Australians are very much aware of the atrocities that occurred and what caused them. I guess we can only pray that these students will pass on the message to their peers and ensure that it never happens again.
ReplyDeleteHaving heard stories first hand from a handful of Holocaust survivors that volunteered their time at the Centre, I can only say God help mankind if we allow this to happen again.
The problem is that young people now have grown up with the current crop of politicians. They will perceive Le Pen/Farage/Trump as 'old school' and 'normal'.I guess that's what happens. Couldn't believe the Danish Govt. rep I saw on tv who was basically kissing Trump's ass re his talk about the US claim to Greenland. So much for being in NATO!
