Elkie Brooks
Golders Green Hippodrome
London, England
October 8th 1977
Fresh capture from the wireless.
The Salford lass recorded three years after the demise of Vinegar Joe.
The band on this recording play really well and provide great backing vocals.
Bass and drums are particularly impressive.
Elkie had married and divorced, Vinegar Joe guitarist, Pete Gage by this point
and would go on to marry her sound engineer, Trevor Jordan, the following year.
(a bit of trivia for all you trivia fans)
The song 'Lilac Wine has always interested me.
Later a Jeff Buckley standard, it was written by James Shelton
for the 1950 musical 'Dance Me a Song'.
It was recorded in 1953 by Eartha Kitt (remember her?)
Eartha was really cool, had a great voice
and. in 1967, played Catwoman in the original Batman TV series.

It's so nice to come back home after a week in Creta - definitely a nice place to be - and discover this marvelous recording of Ms Brooks. She never had a better band than these guys, I admit. What a joy to download, burn to CD and play LOUD !
