After recent comments by Georg from Giessen
I was surprised to see the town in the news.
A meeting set to launch the new youth wing
of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was delayed on Saturday
as thousands of protestors blocked access to the event venue.
Anti-AfD protestors began descending on the town of Giessen
from early morning, with police also out in force.
One of the protest organisations, 'Resist',
said that it blocked several routes towards the AfD meeting
and had gathered 15,000 people.
Well done to those who made a stand against the AfD.
regards
Titus

And although it was complete chaos - even on the surrounding streets and highways - it was important and necessary as a message. Georg from Giessen again ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy wife is German, originally from Greven. She thinks Giessen was chosen due to it being, pretty much, in the middle of Germany. She's familiar with the area as she spent time in Marburg during her student days.
DeleteThat could very well be the case. Perhaps it was also the belief that less resistance would be encountered outside the major cities. Of course, media interest in the AfD always plays a significant role as well. Ultimately, the focus was primarily on the peaceful protests.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, Marburg was the better choice. I can judge this because I don't actually live in Giessen, but nearby in Wettenberg, right at the foot of a medieval castle.
Looks nice and with a small population...so only a handful of far right activists to cope with then? ouch :)
DeleteI thought this blog was about music, but it appears to be about politics, with support to Antifas activists. Not my stuff. Auf Wiedersehen.
ReplyDeleteSorry you're unhappy Klaus. I've never said my blog is about music. Politics is part of art and life.
