Three generations of Millses
Sir John Mills (born Lewis Ernest Watts Mills)
(22 February 1908 – 23 April 2005)
was an English actor who appeared in more than 120 films
in a career spanning seven decades.
He excelled on camera as an appealing British everyman
who often portrayed guileless, wounded war heroes.
When I was a boy 'The War' seemed like ancient history.
As I've got older I've realised just how post-war my upbringing was.
John Mills did indeed exemplify a certain British aspiration.
This is a great film.
The minimalist background demands a good script.
An early example of a culture shift from a basic,
but understandable, 'Allies good/Germans bad' approach
to a more nuanced perspective.

Hayley Catherine Rose Vivien Mills (born 18 April 1946)
is an English actress and singer.
A daughter of Sir John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell
and younger sister of actress Juliet Mills.
Hayley was the star of numerous 'shorts' which were shown
on Saturday mornings at my local ABC Minors cinema club.
Whistle Down the Wind remains a classic.
Released only three years after Dad's 'Ice Cold in Alex'
it was cutting edge and controversial.
I think Hayley was something of a pioneer in terms of 'serious' roles for female actors.

Good quality recording of the band fronted by Crispian Mills
who is the son/grandson of actors Hayley/John.
What an annoyingly talented family.

Great film, Ice Cold in Alex . Anthony Quale plays the part of Elon Musk I believe.
ReplyDeleteIn the sequel Quale moves to the USA using his white South African persona...maybe? :)
