Ry Cooder
Great American Music Hall
San Francisco
December 15th 1976
I was listening to a few 'new' bootlegs all of which were crap.
So I plucked something off the shelf...
A radio broadcast (originally)
This version seems to be ripped from vinyl.
Anyway...it ain't perfect but I really like it and recommend it to any Ry fans out there
who ain't already got it.
In 1979 I decided it was time to find out just who this Ry Cooder was.
So I bought his new album...Bop till You Drop.
I liked it.
Very Thing That Makes You Rich is still my go-to Ry song.
Back-tracked his catalogue/bought the new stuff (as you do)
I grew up listening to Jim Reeves. He was my Mother's number one.
So when I bought Chicken Skin Music and discovered Ry's version of He'll Have to Go
(a song made famous by Gentleman Jim Reeves)
It seemed like a circle had been squared.
(pretentious?...moi?)
I've seen Ry play live a couple of times.
Most infamous was the time he was at the Apollo in Manchester. I'm guessing early 90s.
It so happened that England were playing a major game that night.
(I'm talking football/soccer and promise to keep such talk to a minimum)
World Cup or Euros?...can't remember.
Anyway...Many people had set videos to record the game while they attended the gig.
Ry thought it was a good idea to relay the score to the crowd throughout the show.
This was met with boos/jeering which completely puzzled Ry.
It's because he is a 'Christian'.
Mum's second favourite was Eddie Fisher.
But she kept that quiet as he was considered, by her parents,
as half way between Adolf Hiter and Satan.

Titus
