Ozric Tentacles
A New Day Festival
Hernhill, Kent
August 20th 2021

Reposted from November 2021

After a two year absence
the 'A New Day' festival returned in August.

This is a remastered audience recording of the, hour long, Ozric set.
Their Hillage/Gong/Hawkwind soup always sounds great
although they are not a band I have followed closely.
I suspect this was recorded by one of those deck-chair jockeys
who go every year and park themselves under the huge tree. :)
They arrive early and even know where the sun 'will be' so they
have the best spot to avoid the dehydration the rest of us have to suffer.
OK they're just better organised than I am.
The tree is not near the stage, and it sounds like that area to my ears.
(stop going on about where you think the bloody taper was...Ed,)
Mrs. Luxor & I went to this fest in 2018.
Not sure we got tickets as such,
probably just an e-ticket (ugh!)
It was a brilliant line-up as I hope you'll agree:

Arthur Brown stole the show for me along with Dr. Schwamp
(who were extraordinarily good and I even bought a T-shirt!)
This festival has the best cuisine immaginable.
I kid you not. No crappy burgers here.
Delicious food from around the world!
Frau Luxor wasn't thinking "who's on tomorrow?"
Her main preoccupation was "what shall I have for lunch tomorrow?".
It's a laid back family event with some great music.
Not much accomodation nearby though so it's taxies there and back
from a hotel every day for non-campers like me.
The late night taxi exodus is an experience.
The staff who oversee it deserve medals.
You are all 'held' back behind, barely adequate, barriers.
(it's generally good natured and maybe 100 people waiting)
As each taxi arrives a member of the crew goes over,
asks the driver the name of his booking and shouts it out.
A chorus of "Johnny Zappa?" echoes around
until a slighly flusterd 65 year old, who is bald
but somehow still has a ponytail, finally emerges.
He, his wife, 38 year old daughter and his mate since school
jump into the car and we wait for it to all start again.
Worst moments are when the staff guy pulls his head
slowley from the driver's window,
shrugs his shoulders at his barrier-guarding collegues
and reluctantly calls out "er...Paul?".
Takes a while to sort that one out
and people get trampled in the rush of 'Pauls'.
It was great when everyone was shouting "Titus?"
Me n the Frau sped off into the night
looking back at the sad faces of those poor souls still in Limbo.
I'm sure they all escaped eventually...fingers crossed.
Back to this recording...
There is some chatter from the neighbours but it feels like you're there.
Just imagine you are sitting in a deck chair in the shade of a huge tree
in a beautiful park, in the afternoon, in late summertime Kent.
Bottle of wine maybe...?
...and you're eating duck a l'orange or Moroccan lentil soup
(depending on your politics)
and the Ozrics are playing :)
(and you are nuts...Ed.)
regards
Titus

  2. What about Steve Harley that day ? Any memories of his concert.
Just in case, it's obviously one of my favourite musician ever. He still is in the Top 100 best songs ever in Flanders (Belgium) every year at Christimas Time with... no, not Make me Smile... with his masterpiece Sebastian ! Strange how we Flemish people were into that song.
