Metal for Muthas 1980

Sounds music paper did a promotional thing
which involved collecting a few tokens.
Once you had enough you sent off for this free album.
It was focusing on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
aka NWOBHM. (not a genre that slips easily off the tongue)

Two songs from the fledgling Iron Maiden
who, as we know, inexplicably went on to fame and fortune.
Saw them open for Judas Priest, in 79 I think,
when Sanctuary was the only song we'd heard!
Praying Mantis is (and always was) head & shoulders above the rest.
They sound like Wishbone Ash.
Nutz had been around for ages and their inclusion is rather odd.
Great vocal from Paul Samson (before Bruce turned up and ruined it)
I've always had a soft spot for Sledgehammer's eponymous tune.
Toad the Wet Sprocket sound like they inadvertantly stumbled into the wrong studio.
They play trad rock/blues with a singer who sounds like Burke Shelley from Budgie.
Quite good, but out of place here.
It's in empathy format :)
regards
Titus

  2. Nice one, thanks. So you don't like Bruce Dickinson's voice at all or just what he did with Samson?
I have the first Nutz album, bought the vinyl in Spain, it had an interesting cover... and a nice price sticker I think.

    1. Bruce is not on this. It is Paul Samson on vocals. You may know this. But I dislike all things Maiden/Dickinson except the scream for me Sarajevo thing which I will post if requested

    1. Yes, accurate review indeed. Praying Mantis weakness is the vocals for me.
I love Maiden since I was a teenager and I think Bruce brought them to higher status. I've seen them maybe six or seven times, they come here regularly :) Steve has a house in Algarve I believe.

  4. Thanks Titus, I've not heard this in over 20 years. NWOBHM, was very exciting for me when I left school and had a bit of money, so I got to see quite a few of those bands. I have a ticket stub from 1979(?) for Def Leppard admission price £1.95.

    1. Posting this made me think of some other obscure stuff from that era. I thought of making my own compilation. You overpaid for Leppard LOL, I recall their debut 'Get Yer Rocks Off' (which would be on my compilation)
