Others for Muthas
various artists 1978-1980
This is my companion piece to the Metal for Muthas post.
01 Def Leppard - Getcha Rocks Off
I am not much of a fan of the Defs but I remember this early single.
It was a relief to hear a new, young band who were not punk!
02 Fist - Name, Rank and Serial number
An old favourite. The album version was different from this single.
I really don't know much more about them.
03 Girl - My Number
Bit of a lipstick and eyeliner outfit but this is a great pop/rock tune.
Vocalist Phil Lewis went on to front US band L.A. Guns
(He got that job because he turned up with a vanity case full of cosmetics)
and guitarist Phil Collen later joined Def Leppard.
I saw them open for KISS once. The crowd were merciless.
Girl left the stage covered in spit after a short set dodging incoming missiles.
Even a rendition of KISS' 'Do You Love Me' failed to win them any favour.
04 Saxon - Big Teaser
Saw them play live a couple of times, most notably at the first Donington
Monsters of Rock festival. They were good but perhaps not quite my thing.
747 Strangers in the Night was a memorable song though.
I chose to include this early single for the compilation
05 Paralex - Black Widow
Had a 12 inch E.P. by this band which included this song.
Great garage rock feel.
06 Tygers of Pan Tang - Don't Touch Me There
Another band I didn't really get into but they had a following.
Oddly enough they are still active and I saw them about 4 years ago
at a festival in Kent. They were pretty good!
07 Motörhead - Louie Louie
A wonderful track. Lemmy was the real deal.
08 Girlschool - Take It All Away
Saw them open for a few bands including Motörhead.
They could really play but had to cope with the un-woke late 70s audience
who were mainly young guys shouting 'get yer kit off' etc.
09 V2 - Man in the Box
This one is slightly different. It's from 1978
and has a post punk/new wave/indie edge to it.
The riff is a shameless reworking of KISS' 'Black Diamond'.
Reminds me of early Ultravox songs from the 'Young Savage' era.
10 Venom - In League with Satan
Again, not a band I gave much attention to but in retrospect
they were pioneering in the field that became death/thrash/doom/growl metal.
regards
Titus
Interesting, at first glance the only no-no is Venom but there's some I've never heard of like V2, Fist, Paralex. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

yeah, those are the three I would class as obscure. But then they're only obscure if you don't know them :)
