    Still a very nice gig/recording though.

  3. yea i got the same impression when i saw miles. earlier the day of the show a customer where i worked said he didn't get miles' music.
    i had listened to very little jazz at that point and had a similar reaction- miles was not out-front soloist i had expected. much more abstract and minimalist. when i came across a recording of the show i saw a couple of years back though it was much more up my alley!

    1. It's still a great show. There are more sax and guitar 'solos' than Miles on trumpet but maybe Miles was hanging back on purpose? Minimalist as you say. Perhaps our preconceptions were being challenged...or Miles was just riding the gravy train? :)

    2. miles had recently returned to live performance and i think he was showcasing his band (incl 22 year old marcus miller) and making each of his statements dramatic events?
      i just came across an interesting article here, just started reading but his instructions to mike stern (and turning his amp up!) are telling...
